1. SUSTAINABILITY POLICY STATEMENT
BCA are committed to delivering high-quality mechanical and electrical engineering solutions that minimise environmental impact, promote energy efficiency and support sustainable development. We recognise our responsibility to contribute to a low-carbon future and to operate in an ethical, socially responsible manner.
1.1 OBJECTIVES
We aim to:
• Reduce carbon emissions associated with our designs and operations
• Promote energy-efficient and low-carbon building systems.
• Minimise waste and resource consumption.
• Support clients in achieving sustainability certifications (e.g. BREEAM, LEED).
• Ensure compliance with all relevant environmental legislation and standards.
1.2 DESIGN PRINCIPLES
In all projects we will:
• Prioritise energy efficiency through passive and active design strategies.
• Specify low-carbon technologies (e.g. heat pumps. Renewable energy systems).
• Encourage whole-life costing and lifecycle analysis.
• Design systems that reduce water consumption and improve indoor environmental
quality.
• Integrate smart controls and building management systems for optimisation.
1.3 OPERATIONAL COMMITMENTS
Within our own business operations, we will:
• Reduce office energy use and transition to renewable energy where possible.
• Minimise travel emissions (encourage remote meetings, low-carbon transport).
• Reduce waste and increase recycling.
• Source sustainable materials and services.
• Monitor and report on our environmental performance.
1.4 PEOPLE AND CULTURE
We will:
• Train and support staff in sustainable engineering practices.
• Promote diversity, inclusion and employee wellbeing.
• Encourage innovation in sustainable design.
• Engage with stakeholders to share knowledge and best practices.
1.5 COMPLIANCE AND STANDARDS
We are committed to:
• Meeting or exceeding applicable environmental legislation.
• Aligning with standards such as ISO 14001 (Environmental Management Systems).
• Supporting net-zero carbon goals in line with UK targets.
1.6 CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT
We will:
• Set measurable sustainability targets.
• Regularly review and improve our performance.
• Incorporate lessons learned into future projects.
1.7 RESPONSIBILITY
This policy applies to all employees and is supported by senior management. Responsibility for implementation for implementation lies with all staff, with leadership providing resources and oversight.
This policy will be reviewed annually to ensure it remains relevant and effective.
2. ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY
We are committed to integrate an effective Environmental Management System (EMS) into our own business practices by:
- Investigating ways to reduce the use of hazardous and toxic materials and substances both in the office and on all design work undertaken.
- Reducing consumption of natural resources and improve the efficient use of those resources by economic operational practices.
- Measuring our carbon footprint created by our business activities and taking action to reduce this footprint.
- Managing any waste generated from our business operations, following the principles of reduce → reuse → recycle.
- Considering environmental impact and energy performance of both our own office buildings, and in the designs of all projects undertaken.
- Complying with all relevant environmental legislation and guidelines.
- Consider the environmental impact of all supplies, including those specified for project work and their attitude to relevant environmental considerations.
- Working together with all employees, stakeholders and service partners to improve our environmental performance
- Regularly reviewing our environmental policy and striving for continual improvement.
Our environmental policy provides the framework for setting and reviewing environmental objectives and targets. It is documented, implemented, maintained and communicated to all employees.
BCA require all employees to fulfil their environmental responsibility and requirements at all times.
