The refurbishment of the historic Lord Leycester Hospital presented a unique opportunity to sensitively upgrade building services within one of the UK’s most significant medieval heritage sites. As Mechanical and Electrical (M&E) consulting engineers, we were appointed to design and integrate modern levels of building services, while preserving the architectural and cultural integrity of the site.

Working within a Grade I listed building required a highly considered approach. Strict conservation requirements limited intervention into original timber structures and historic finishes. All new services needed to be discreet and reversible intervention wherever possible. We developed low-impact M&E solutions tailored to the building’s fabric. This included discreet routing of services through existing voids and careful positioning of plant to avoid visual intrusion. Energy-efficient systems were specified to improve performance while respecting heritage constraints. Measures included:
- High-efficiency heating systems with improved zoning
- LED lighting upgrades designed to complement historic interiors
- Controls systems to optimise energy use and operational flexibility
Close collaboration with conservation officers, architects, and stakeholders ensured all interventions aligned with heritage requirements. Detailed surveys and coordinated BIM/2D layouts reduced risks during installation.
The project demonstrates how thoughtful and sensitive engineering can enhance building performance without compromising heritage value. Our role as M&E consultants was pivotal in balancing conservation with innovation, delivering a solution that respects the past while supporting future requirements.
