Maggies was founded by Maggie Keswick Jencks, who was diagnosed with cancer in 1993. Having been told that she had perhaps 2 to 3 months to live she had to sit in a soulless hospital corridor to come to terms with this dreadful news. She lived another two years and put all her energy into providing a legacy of better care for terminally ill patients. The first Maggies Centre opened in Edinburgh in 1996 and there are now 23 centres throughout the United Kingdom which offer care and counselling to patients and their families.
This Maggies Centre at The Royal Marsden Hospital in Sutton is in the hospital grounds and Maggies appointed Ab Rogers to design an iconic and eye-catching building to be visually apart from the existing hospital buildings. This has been achieved in no small order.
Bob Costello Associates were delighted to be commissioned to design the mechanical and electrical services for this project. We were required to make sure the atmosphere was warm and homely and that the services were easy to use. Ambient lighting with simple controls was a key requirement and the occupants are completely unaware of the back-of-house technology in the comfortable and extensively day-lit spaces.
This was a most worthwhile and uplifting project and BCA are proud of our long and ongoing association with Maggies who we continue to support.
