The Old Rectory is a Grade II listed residential property with extensive gardens which has been modernised and extended to provide a large family home.
Heating and hot water is provided by three 15kW ground-source heat pumps. These are supplied with water from a borehole in the garden which taps into an aquifer, heat is extracted from the water, and it is returned to the aquifer via a second borehole.
A rainwater recovery system has been installed with a 30000-litre storage tank buried in the garden. This is supplemented by the borehole water at times and is used to irrigate the extensive gardens. The borehole also provides water to the house and is treated for drinking and bathing.
The house is heated by underfloor heating supplemented by decorative radiators. An advanced digital control system is installed to ensure energy consumption is minimised. Thermal solar panels pre-heat hot water and a large 60kW photovoltaic array provides free electricity.
The Architects were Donald Insall Associated, Chester and the main contractor was Treasure & Son Ltd. Exclusive Solutions Ltd developed and installed the extensive AV and lighting controls.
The project is an exemplar of the adoption of low carbon technologies. The Client took up occupation and is delighted with his high-tech home.
