Appointed by the Landmark Trust, the refurbishment and conversion of Calverley Old Hall involved the sensitive restoration and adaptation of a highly significant heritage building into a bespoke historic holiday accommodation offering. The project required the careful integration of mechanical, electrical, and public health (MEP) services within a historic fabric of exceptional architectural and cultural importance. The project was also the winner of the Civic Trust Award and was shortlisted for the prestigious RIBA Yorkshire Award.
The project presented significant challenges due to the building’s listed status, historical significance, and complex existing structure. Careful consideration was required to minimise disturbance to original building fabric while introducing modern services to meet current performance standards. Limited space for service routes and plant, along with the need for reversible and sensitive interventions, were key constraints throughout the design process.
A highly coordinated and discreet MEP strategy was developed to support the building’s new function while respecting its heritage value. Services were carefully routed through existing voids and newly created service zones where appropriate, ensuring minimal visual and physical impact on historic elements. Systems were selected for efficiency, longevity, and ease of maintenance, with particular attention given to low-impact installation methods. Lighting design played a key role in enhancing architectural features and creating a suitable atmosphere for the building’s new use, while maintaining sensitivity to historic surfaces and finishes.
The completed refurbishment successfully brings Calverley Old Hall back into meaningful use, with modern, reliable building services seamlessly integrated into the historic structure. The project delivers improved comfort, functionality, and operational performance while preserving the character and significance of the building.
