Moseley Road Baths, is a listed Grade II* Victorian bath house, originally designed by William Hale and constructed in 1907 using red brick and golden terracotta dressings and is well supported by the local community. The Gala Pool, which used to be the main pool has been out of use for over 10 years and is in a dilapidated state. It is unlikely that the Gala Pool will ever be brought back into use as a swimming pool, but it is a requirement that no works prevent this from happening at some time in the future. Sponsored by Historic England, who have given a Repair Grant for the urgent repairs, the Gala Pool it is to be brought back into use as a multi-function event space. Due to limited amount of funding only essential and fairly basic mechanical and electrical services can be provided. Donald Insall Associates engaged BCA to survey and design the limited M&E works which were to include mechanical ventilation for winter months, repairs and updating of the existing steam powered boilers, provision of general and emergency lighting and provision of a mandatory fire alarm.
It was decided that, other than electrical circuits to fixed elements there would be no permanent electrical distribution system provided in the Gala Pool at this time. All wiring for events was to be of a temporary nature specific to the event and would be removed following the event.
A new flexible lighting scheme was provided at high level either side of the Pool Hall
The Gala Pool is heated by a simple heating system designed to achieve a minimum of 12oC internally for conservation heating which can also provide more comfortable conditions when required. Heating is provided by unit heaters at high level discharging warm air down and across the space.
A simple control system utilising a single adjustable thermostat controls the system.
